Whispering Interpreting Services

At WordlyWise Interpreting, we offer this service, also known as chuchotage. It is ideal for confidential meetings or events involving a small number of participants.

For instance, when two heads of state meet under closed doors, the interpreter will quickly translate to bridge the language gap. Whispered translation can also be used when one participant requires assistance.

Whispered interpreting allows more flexibility, as no equipment is required. The interpreter stays close to the speaker and translates in a low voice. Depending on the length of the assignment, two interpreters may be required due to the stress and fatigue caused by speaking in a lower voice for long periods of time.

It is also possible to perform whispered interpreting with a tour guide system. With the portable equipment, the interpreter can speak in the microphone and up to 20-25 listeners can hear on small headsets. It is fantastic for factory visits, for instance, where background noise may be too loud for clients to listen to the interpreter.

Our interpreters are experienced with whispered interpreting and can advise the client how is the best way to serve their needs.

Whispered Interpreting Services in the UK and Globally

Benefits of Using a Professional Interpreter

Whispered interpreting gives more flexibility to the client. The interpreter can travel with one client or with a small group of people. They make sure that there are no language barriers.

Most of our interpreters are members of professional associations such as the ITI – Institute of Translation and Interpreting and the Chartered Institute of Linguists. As such, they abide to a Code of Professional Conduct which includes integrity, competence and confidentiality.

When to Use Whispered Interpreting

If the subject matter is highly specialised, interpreters will need background information. The client could send draft presentations in advance or general information about the topic. Interpreter will treat all information as confidential. The better the preparation, the better interpreters will translate for you during the event.

This type of interpretation is a suitable choice for the following situations:

  • Business meetings with a small number of participants
  • Board meetings
  • One-to-one or small groups
  • Confidential meetings with senior politicians
  • Foreign executives attending international events

Whispered interpreting with a portable system:

  • Factory visits
  • Training courses for a small number of people
  • Technical missions taking place in different locations

When a Whispered Interpreter Cannot be Used?

Whispered interpreting may distract other participants in certain situations. For instance, if delegates are going to attend a large conference, it is more adequate to use simultaneous interpretation. Otherwise, the interpretation may distract participants and listeners may think that the interpreter and the client are “chatting”, not receiving interpretation.

It is difficult to interpret for more than two people at a time. Interpreters will need regular breaks as this form of interpreting can lead to fatigue.
